Meet Our Dental HK Team!

Our lead dentist in Hong Kong – Dr. David W.K Tong, studied dentistry at Guy’s Dental Hospital, London, England and became a qualified dentist in August 1985, with B.D.S from the University of London, and L.D.S., R.C.S. from the Royal College of Surgeons, England. After graduating from university, he returned to Hong Kong in 1986 to start own dental clinic in HK.

During this time, he was also offered a part-time clinical lecturer position at Prince Philip Dental School (PPDH) University of Hong Kong from 1986-2002. On the days he wasn’t working as a private dentist in Hong Kong, he would go into Prince Philip dental Hong Kong hospital to teach year 3 to year 5 students in the department of Conservative Dentistry, Emergency and Primary Care Unit and Family Dental Care Unit.

After working a few years at his own dental clinic in Hong Kong, Dr. Tong was requested by a local Dental Corporation to help with starting up a new dental Hong Kong clinic in the Causeway Bay area. This started in 1999 and he worked with this dental clinic in Hong Kong up until the year 2005.

In 2005, Dr. Tong started another self-run dental clinic in the Central District of Hong Kong Island. This dental clinic is our current dental Central surgery, and is the same one you will be visiting if you book in to see Dr. Tong for a dental HK visit too!

One motto our patients will often hear from Dr. Tong is that “Only NECESSARY treatment(s) will be recommended and performed”. Dr. Tong focuses on providing general dentistry for the whole family at our dental Central clinic. As our lead dentist in HK, he strongly believes in providing quality and not quantity care. All dental Hong Kong treatment(s) undertaken are performed to the highest standards, with comprehensive aftercare provided as part of our dental clinic’s philosophy of total patient care.

We have a close-knit dental clinic HK team, committed to providing each and every one of our dental Hong Kong patients with the type of care we would provide to our own family. Our dental clinic in Central specialises in performing care for the entire family and in using a holistic approach to restore your teeth and oral health. Staff at our dental clinic in Central are fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin, so you don’t have to worry about any potential language barriers. As a matter of fact, Dr. Tong as our Lead Dentist in Central, is currently learning to speak mandarin at 63 years of age!

Starting her dental Hong Kong career with us back in 2012, Ying Ying has been personally trained by Dr. Tong in treatment assisting and management of the dental clinic. Throughout the years working as a dental HK nurse, Ying Ying has learnt the importance of good teamwork and “four-handed dentistry” when treating our dental Hong Kong patients.

Excelling in reading the minds of patients and our dental Central team, Ying Ying has become an integral part of our dental clinic in Hong Kong. You can be sure that if Ying Ying is there to help out in the dental clinic, you will be cared for from the first moment you sit in the chair, to the last gargle you take before leaving our dentist in Central!

Ruby started with us in 2014, and has been our designated dental Hong Kong receptionist for the past decade. With over 10 years of dental HK experience in managing patients and all their requests, she understands the importance of being caring, attentive, organised and time efficient. You can feel free to ask Ruby any questions with regards to dental Central booking availability, or other important questions regarding your planned dental clinic HK visit, and she will help you as soon as possible.

Dr. Tong’s Professional Achievements as a Dental Clinician in Hong Kong

Dr. Tong specialises in general dentistry in HK, meaning that he can provide professional dental care in Hong Kong for your entire family, whenever it is needed. From doing simple fillings, making custom fitted mouth guards, to surgically removing painful wisdom teeth, Dr. Tong will be there to help you and your family at a call’s reach.

With particular interest in orthodontic treatment and implant surgery, Dr Tong attended multiple dental Hong Kong courses as well as across the globe to enhance his skill set to offer these treatments at his dental clinic.

2005:

Dr. Tong started his implant surgery journey back in April 2005 with a number of his dental HK colleagues. They had attended the ADC basic course in which they learnt the basics of choosing appropriate cases, learning the steps of how to properly place a dental prosthesis, and how to complete the surgery with proper suturing techniques, as well as how to offer proper post-operative care for the patient. In the same year in August, he also attended the ITI implantology course conducted in Taiwan.

2006:

The following year, he attended additional courses on the same subject:

  • Feb 2006 - ADC advance implant course;
  • May 2006 - Implant treatment in difficult cases course;
  • August 2006 - Certification ITI course in Switzerland/Basel;

2007:

To further broaden his dental Hong Kong patients’ options, Dr. Tong realised the importance and need for learning specialised orthodontic treatment for aesthetic improvement and correcting misaligned teeth. To improve his dental HK skill set, in the early months of April and July of 2007, Dr. Tong attended both part 1 and 2 of the Comprehensive Orthodontic Program course. After the course, he immediately brought these newly learned skills back to his dental clinic in HK and started to offer this treatment to his patients and was thrilled to be able to help more patients achieve their smile goals.

2008:

In March of 2008, a dental HK course Dr. Tong attended offered an abundant amount of information about the proper management of bone preservation for implant placement. This was an important aspect of such surgeries because in order to be successful in such procedures, we ideally need to preserve healthy thick bone after a tooth has been removed at dental clinics.

In September that same year, he attended the “Straumann Bone level implant course”. What was special about this dental HK course was that it allowed him to connect with other dental clinicians in Hong Kong and share their personal experiences. By sharing their experiences and difficulties with dental surgeries in HK, he was able to avoid making the same errors as his fellow dental Hong Kong colleagues, and therefore bring back this knowledge to his dental clinic in Central.

2009:

In April 2009, he attended the Surgical and Prosthetic interface course. The main takeaway Dr. Tong remembers the most is that as a dental clinician in HK, it is always important to consider the prosthetic component of any treatment plan when we are planning the surgical procedures. Here he had learnt the proper management of crown assessment and placement.

This year was also when Dr. Tong went to learn about leading dental Hong Kong surgical procedures in aesthetic implants. In October 2009, Dr. Tong went all the way from his dental clinic to the opposite side of the city to attend this dental HK course.

2010:

In April of 2010, Dr. Tong attended a master course in Geneva, Switzerland. As a dentist working in HK with over 20 years of experience at this point, he was able to learn the art of mastering aesthetic implant dentistry through live surgery demonstration on patients.

With more than 40 years of dental HK experience, you can trust that Dr. Tong will help you achieve any goals. No matter what problem arises, Dr Tong will be able to use his decades of experience to tackle them for you at his dental clinic in the most hassle free and timely manner. Together with our entire dental Central team, you can expect personalised care during every visit to our dental clinic in Central. Without any further ado, make an appointment today with Dr. Tong, and visit our dental clinic in Central, Hong Kong.

Core Principles, Values & Beliefs of Our Dental Clinic

Back in his university days, Dr. Tong met a professor who taught him that “In order to be successful in our career, we have to treat each and every patient that we meet as though they are our own family member.” Listening to this, Dr. Tong realised that this was true and brought this to his own dental clinic in HK.

Here at Dr. Tong’s dental clinic in Central, we like to treat all our patients like family and not just another dental Hong Kong record. Hence, Dr. Tong often exceeds expectations by going above and beyond to help out his dental clinic’s Hong Kong patients. The extra care our dentist and dental HK team provides towards each and every individual can be felt through each appointment. As a dentist HK assistant and receptionist, Ying Ying and Ruby also understand the importance of incorporating this core value in providing care for the patients. Therefore, at any point of your treatment, please feel free to contact our dental Central staff for any issues no matter how big or small they seem.

At our dental clinic in HK, you should expect well rounded service. From the moment you step into the dental clinic to the moment you step outdoors, our dental Central staff will make sure that you are looked after. Sometimes, certain medical conditions can complicate dental Hong Kong treatments, and  they can be painful – We know, which is why our dental Central team will always make sure that after any treatment, no matter how big or small it was, we will check for patient satisfaction and provide suitable aftercare.

An example of someone needing aftercare would be the treatment of dry socket after an extraction. Dry socket is a painful condition where the area that had a tooth removed does not clot properly, leaving the area “dry” and without blood. Without the blood clot acting as a bandage for the area, it leads to a longstanding wound that can cause immense pain. To treat a dry socket, dentists in HK may prescribe pain medication such as panadol may not be enough to solve the issue. Our dental Central team can help by rinsing the area with warm saline water and then applying a special medication into the socket to relieve you of pain. If you suspect that you have a dry socket after an extraction, please feel free to contact our dental clinic in Hong Kong via WhatsApp or dial our number: 3421 0067.

Another example of when dental Hong Kong aftercare is needed would be if you are taking medications for high blood pressure like anticoagulants or a combination of anti-platelet drugs. These cases have a higher risk for prolonged bleeding (more than 24 hours), and can occur after an extraction or any surgical procedure. Our dental Central team would advise that you come back to our dental clinic for aftercare which includes placing additional sutures, packing the area with gauze and making sure that bleeding has stopped before allowing you to leave our dental clinic in HK.

In some cases where aftercare cannot be treated at our dental surgery in HK, we will make sure to follow up with a suitable referral to specialists, or provide you with directions to your nearest available hospital emergency department.

One of the most important principles we follow at our dental clinic is always working in the best interest of the patient. We like to keep things simple, only needed dentist Hong Kong treatments will be performed.

As dental Hong Kong professionals, we use jargon, special numbering systems and technical language to communicate with each other. It becomes second nature to speak this way, so as a patient we understand that it can sometimes be hard to differentiate what is jargon and what is “normal” language when you are sitting in the chair, listening to our dental HK team speak with each other.

But don’t worry! Here at Dr. Tong’s dental clinic in Hong Kong, we believe that communication is key. In order to have good communication, our dental HK team will use easy to understand terms and will avoid using any technical jargon that can lead to confusion whilst explaining our findings, and when we are evaluating treatment options for you.

If things do become a bit hard to understand, feel free to ask our dentist in Central for a simpler explanation or translation if needed. Our dental Central team is also happy to provide you with written instructions if needed.

At Dr. Tong’s dental clinic, we always have your interest at heart. We genuinely care for your own well-being and prioritise your needs and goals. If you could detail your concerns to our dental Central receptionist through phone-call or Whatsapp messaging before your appointment, it will help us to make your dental clinic visit as smooth sailing as possible as well! A common rundown would be:

Step 1: Addressing your main concern, which could be anything. Ranging from an aching tooth needing urgent treatment, bleeding gums or a traumatised tooth that you need fixed by our dentist in Hong Kong.

Step 2: Conducting an in-depth examination, and letting you know all the findings by our dentist in HK. X-rays and photographs taken.

Step 3: Collaborating on a plan together with our dentist in Central, and following it step by step. For example:

  • Once out of pain (tooth has been removed), our dentist in HK may look into getting the tooth replaced
  • Fix other teeth that are cavitated or have the potential to become cavitated
  • Improving your oral hygiene practices
  • Improving your diet
  • Maintenance of dental hygiene with 6-month regular check-ups by our dental clinic in HK

Unlike other professions, dentists in Hong Kong are one of the few health professions that allow for IMMEDIATE pain relief when managed appropriately. Here at our dental clinic, on top of relieving you of this stress and pain, we like to emphasise the importance of doing it in a caring manner.

Having worked many years in the dental HK profession, Dr. Tong has seen a plethora of patients with dental anxiety. Such anxiety is actually very common, and is nothing to be ashamed of. Here at our dental clinic, we want to make sure you feel that you are being heard, have a happy experience with us and leave our dental clinic in Hong Kong feeling relaxed and empowered with a better understanding on how to take better care of your own teeth.

To achieve the desired results, we value the input and views of our dental Central patients. We are a patient-centred dental clinic in HK that strives to make you know that we will always put your interests first.

Patient centred care means that you will always be informed of all dental HK treatment options, and we will always respect your decision. It also means that we will put your comfort and emotional well-being as our top priority. Last but not least, we value your family and they will also be welcome at the dental clinic, and their views will also be respected and valued too.

In order to have better oral hygiene, everyone must have good practices when at home. This includes brushing your teeth every day and night (before you sleep) with a soft bristled toothbrush and by using an appropriate brushing technique for 2 minutes. On top of that, our dental clinic in Central recommends using interdental brushes to clean in between teeth and also gargle with mouthrinse once a week.

Dr Tong strongly believes that dental Hong Kong treatments do not have to be complicated. Of course, certain situations call for more complex planning and careful consideration prior to starting treatment. However, at our dental clinic we like to make sure that we do not perform any unnecessary treatment that can potentially cause more trouble for our dental Central patients!

By keeping treatment simple, maintenance becomes easier, post-operative complications are avoided and you can be sure that you are not being finessed into undergoing any unnecessary dental Hong Kong treatments.

Tong’s dental clinic is located in the heart of central, and is the ideal location to visit if you are also looking forward to having a nice stroll along the metropolitan side of the city, before or after a nice dental clinic visit.

We must admit, good dental clinics in HK are definitely not the easiest thing to find. Especially if you are new to the city or not a local. But known for being the land of expats, many dental clinics in Hong Kong choose to locate themselves in Central due to its name of being the key business district and is also close to many iconic skyscrapers and historical buildings. Our dentist in HK is easily accessible, meaning that the busiest of working bees can still make a quick trip to our dental clinic for a quick clean or 6-months check-up before a busy work meeting!

Having worked in several dental clinics in Hong Kong in the past, Dr. Tong has assessed all the potential this location offered and finally chose to base his own dental clinic in Central. As the junction between Kowloon and Hong Kong sides, Central MTR station is only an 8-minute walk away from our dental clinic in Central, Hong Kong. There are also options for buses where you can be dropped off at the Central Market, Hong Kong Station and just a short 8 minute walk will bring you to our dental clinic. Otherwise, other options like taxi and driving over yourself is certainly feasible, but let us warn you that parking is difficult to come by in the Central area, and making a visit to see Dr. Tong would be much easier via public transport!

Our dental clinic in HK is not only easily accessible via public transport, but we are also close to various specialists if we ever need to refer you for more specific treatments. If deemed appropriate by Dr. Tong after a dental Central examination, and based on your personal preferences as well, you would be able to locate these recommended specialists in the area within 5-10 minutes’ walk away from our dental clinic in Central, Hong Kong.

During a typical dental HK visit with Dr. Tong, you should expect to have a thorough check-up using common dental clinic tools, such as the use of a dental light, suction device (to get rid of the saliva), a probe and also x-ray picture taking. We may also take a series of camera pictures of your teeth for our dental clinic record keeping purposes as well. As we all know the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” By allowing our dentist in HK to take photographs of your teeth, it gives us a faster and better overview of what can be seen and also makes treatment planning and decision making much more straightforward between you and our dentist in Hong Kong.

Many forms of transportation options are available to get to our dental clinic in Hong Kong. Our dentist in Central is located along Lyndhurst Terrace, at the centre of Lan Kwai Fong.

  • By MTR: Take the Hong Kong Island line to Central station, and then take Exit D2 to Lyndhurst terrace (around 8-min walk only).
  • By Taxi / Uber: Drop off at 46 Lyndhurst Terrace, 13A Oriental Crystal Commercial Building, Central, Hong Kong
  • Walking via Central Mid-levels escalator: Starting from Queen’s Road Central to Conduit Road, follow the signs that guide you to Lan Kwai Fong (or LKF). Take two flights of escalators and take the second exit down the stairs. Cross the road to find Oriental Crystal Commercial Building, which is where our dentist in Hong Kong is located.

It is recommended that patients come for a dental Central check-up every 6 months, to ensure that you have clean and healthy teeth and gums. Our dentist in Central loves to see patients regularly, because this means we can catch potential problems before they happen. As the saying goes – “Prevention is always the best medicine!”

At each 6-month check up, you should expect that our dentist in HK will keep an eye on potential issues, will monitor your diet, grinding habits, old fillings or dental work, as well as look out for many other unexpected signs of damage to your oral health.

Sometimes oral diseases can occur without us knowing, such as gum disease. Also known as a “silent killer”, gum disease is pain free and it is usually too late to get it fixed by a dentist in Hong Kong the time you notice its signs or symptoms. You may find that your teeth become wobbly or your gums start bleeding even when you’re eating. By coming into our dental clinic for regular visits, we make sure that this silent killer is stopped in its tracks and bring you back to health with oral hygiene instructions, as well as a good deep cleaning.

Our dental clinic in Hong Kong is equipped with modern technology required to provide you with comprehensive services. We are a dental clinic that offers mercury free treatments, and Dr. Tong will always ensure that you are provided with appropriate and safe options.
At our dental clinic in Central Hong Kong, we accept all payment options including FPS, EPS, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Cheque, Cash or Bank transfer.
Because all treatments by our dental clinic to patients are catered to each and every individual, it is difficult to give you an exact estimate of how much treatment will cost. However, our dental clinic in Hong Kong can provide you with a quotation of any fees that are involved before proceeding with further treatment, after a thorough examination has been conducted
Unfortunately, at this point in time our dental clinic in HK does not accept health care vouchers, but we aim to introduce this option in the near future. Our dental clinic will endeavour to let patients know when this option is available.

To practise good oral hygiene at home, our dentist in Hong Kong suggests that you incorporate brushing and interdental flossing into your daily routine.

  • Brush twice a day. Once in the morning and once just before you sleep at night.
  • Floss twice a day. (Or whenever you feel like it! Dr. Tong is a strong advocate of interdental brushes which can be used everywhere you go. For more information on these brushes, ask our dentist in Central about them!)
  • Use fluoridated toothpaste
  • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks
  • Snack on “teeth friendly” foods such as cheese, crackers, chewing gum, vegetables and nuts
  • Use alcohol free mouth rinse once a week

X-rays help our dentist in Central identify areas of caries, gum disease, infected teeth and many other important problems that cannot be seen simply by looking into the mouth.

Our dental Central team understands that many people can feel uncomfortable taking x-rays due to the potential risks that come with radiation exposure. But it should be noted that radiation doses used for dental clinic Hong Kong x-rays are very low. The amount of x-ray radiation you would be exposed to with 4 small dental clinic x-rays is equivalent to 1 day of background radiation or a 1-2 hour flight. A larger x-ray also known as a panoramic dental x-ray would be equivalent to 3 days of background radiation.

At our dental clinic, we use up-to-date equipment and techniques that help minimize your radiation exposure. Our dentist in HK will only choose to use x-rays when they are absolutely necessary to help you with proper diagnosis and treatment planning. If you have any concerns regarding x-ray taking, feel free to let our dental clinic HK team know and we will try to explain the reason we are taking them.

Dental clinic X-rays are considered safe at all stages of pregnancy. The amount of radiation you are exposed to for dental clinic x-ray radiation is equivalent to a 1-2 hour flight or approximately one full day of background radiation. Despite this, we want to make sure you feel as comfortable with your dental Central appointment as possible therefore at our dental clinic in HK, we will make sure that all safety precautions are used to protect you during pregnancy. We will do this by providing an abdominal and thyroid shield for optimal protection at our dental clinic in Hong Kong.

It is recommended that any elective complicated dental Hong Kong treatments be delayed until after pregnancy. However, if you are under a lot of pain and discomfort and the risks of delaying dental clinic Hong Kong treatment outweighs the potential harm to your pregnancy, then it is warranted and you should be seen by our dentist in Central as soon as possible.

Sometimes lying back for long treatment by a dentist in Hong Kong, and then getting up too quickly can cause low blood pressure, leading to a condition known as postural hypotension. After any dentist HK treatment, it is advised that you take your time to get out of the chair, and let our dental clinic Hong Kong staff know if you feel unwell.

Some prevention methods:

  • Make sure to have some food or breakfast prior to your dental HK appointment
  • Ask for a pillow or neck support before treatment starts at the dental clinic in HK
  • Arrange transport or ask someone to accompany you on your way home after treatment at a dentist in Hong Kong
  • Notify us if you tend to feel anxious at the dental clinic

I have been having a complicated dental problem for a long time. I needed a bridge replacement, but the underlying tooth was in a bad condition and for other health reasons I could not bear an implant. Some dentists didn't dare to start at all and others could only do it with an implant. Dr. Tong put in effort to save my underlying tooth and succeeded in replacing the bridge with his very skilled, precise work and patience. His whole supporting staff took 3 months but I am very happy now. I went there after having been slightly disappointed in my visits to other dentists in Hong Kong where I explained my situation. Dr Tong gave it some time, did a thorough tooth cleaning and when the problem became acute took diligent action. I also like the smaller size of the clinic with his friendly staff.

What a pleasant experience! I went in for a consultation regarding an implant. Dr. Tong was precise and kind. He was straightforward enough to tell me that the procedure should wait until I went back to the US because of complicated timing. This kind of honesty is much appreciated after having suffered through US dentists who recommend unnecessary procedures. A lot of money saved, a lot of worry avoided. The scheduler was excellent in getting me in quickly — and she was so nice and cheerful. For those in Central, it's a great location. The office is small and clean. Everyone was pleasant. Although I did not have a procedure this time, I will go back to Dr. Tong should I require procedures.

About 3 months ago, I cracked the enamel of a molar and had it checked out by another dentist who told me there was a problem with the root canal plus I needed root canal treatment on 2 other teeth plus other cavities - I then did some research as I wanted a second opinion and am very happy I found Dr. Tong. On my first visit, after initial examination and X-rays, Dr. Tong assured me my teeth were not in as bad a state as I was led to believe and suggested I only needed attention to the cracked molar and a premolar root canal. On my first visit, I was very impressed by Dr. Tong's professionalism in answering my queries, excellent bedside manner and total transparency re: cost. On subsequent visits, I was even more impressed with his attention to details, soft touch and absolutely pain free treatments i.e. root canal and in sorting out my cracked molar with a new composite filling and gold crown. So much so I asked Dr. Tong to completely revamp my whole set of teeth. It is rare indeed for a patient to ask for more treatment than initially sketched on the first consultation but I finally find in Dr. Tong a dentist who acts in the best interest of his patients. I am very happy to report it is all very good value and for the first time in over 20 years, I now have a set of healthy and well groomed teeth, all thanks to the good dentist. My first impression with the clinic began with the quiet efficiency from the first call I made (helpful information over the phone) and duly impressed by the minimum waiting time on my first visit - a truly friendly and prompt response team every time.

My original bridge snapped on the two teeth holding this together, the teeth had rooted underneath. Bone decay , real overall problems that had stemmed from poor treatment years before. Had to have implants, deep cleaning, post to hold the tooth, bone work, new bridge, never felt uncomfortable and the treatment was done over a period of time. Would highly recommend and will return with my 13 year old daughter. Simply quite brilliant , the way they handled my case and the treatment I received was first class. Just waitng for final fitting of my new bridge. Very clean and extremely friendly, liked the family feel to the dental practice. Hong kong can be very commercial sometimes, but this practice is far from that , warm and all about the patient and their well being

I found Dr. Tong online as I was new to HK having come from the USA and I was looking for a dentist for treatment. As he was my first pick, I was pleasantly surprised how well the overall treatment has been. Dr Tong and his staff are very professional and they ensure your comfort, from the short wait to explaining the procedure in clear terms for your easy understanding. Both Dr. Tong & his staff are fluent in English which was extremely helpful. From the first visit to each subsequent visit, each time service was pristine, quick ( very little waiting time) with Dr. Tong treating me as if I were his only patient. His staff are very personable and attentive with always following up with appointments and accommodating to my schedule.

I chose this dentist because of a friend’s referral and I’ve been to him quite a few times now. I’ve had general check-ups as well as fillings and today I had my crown replaced. The treatment is quite expensive, but I live in Hong Kong where the cost of living is generally high. I don’t think really think it’s value for money, but he is a very good dentist and we’re very happy with the service. Because it was just a standard filling, I didn’t have to go back for follow-ups, but I have his details so I can return if I feel the need to. The dentist is pretty good. His English is excellent and he has great bedside manner too. The rates are not higher than other private dentists here - I think it’s the standard price.

About 40 years ago, I had several fillings done using amalgam (silver) paste. I have recently become concerned about the condition of these, and the potential for leakage of mercury, which, of course, is highly toxic. Dr David was, from the outset, extremely helpful, friendly and professional. we communicated by email about the treatment plan (as I live in Abu Dhabi). I then traveled to Hong Kong, to have the work done. Throughout, the treatment was extremely well done, painless and effective
