Veneers Dental Treatment

One of the most important features people notice when you smile is the condition of your teeth. Sometimes a single tooth may need minor adjustments to make your entire smile shine, and that is when veneers in Hong Kong can be useful to help you achieve that.

Veneers by Dentists to Brighten Up Your Smile

If you are not satisfied with the appearance of your teeth, a cosmetic makeover can be considered by using veneers in HK. Whether it be due to imperfections such as badly stained teeth, chipped teeth, worn enamel, uneven tooth size or shape, small gaps between teeth, or slight crowding or crooked teeth, a veneers dental treatment when done properly, would be able to give you the beautiful celebrity smile we all desire. Dr. Tong has years of experience in performing veneers dental treatment, and always aims to achieve results that look natural.

Cosmetic dentistry can improve your smile in a subtle way by whitening or changing a discoloured filling. For more profound changes, full crowns or veneers in HK may be required. Before any procedure is considered, a thorough check-up is performed by our veneers dentist.

Veneers in Hong Kong are Growing in Popularity

Veneers in HK have seen growing popularity as the local population is becoming aware of the benefits and outcomes that can be achieved through this option. Veneers in Hong Kong are usually placed on front teeth, and are either a composite or porcelain shell that is attached to your tooth to mask any imperfections in your own teeth. Most veneers dental treatment cases would require removal of a thin layer of tooth enamel to allow for the veneer material to fit properly.

When Veneers HK Treatment is Recommended

  • Cases of mild discoloration, such as tetracycline staining, discoloration following the loss of vitality (the veneers dentist can increase success by using whitening techniques beforehand)
  • Hypoplasia of the enamel – coverage of labial surface defects
  • Repair of structural damage – Fractured teeth
  • Severe imbrication of teeth
  • Tooth wear (abrasive or abfraction lesions)
  • Wanting to close a space when cases of orthodontics are inappropriate
  • Wanting to modify the shape of a tooth (within limits) e.g. for peg-shaped lateral incisors
  • Your age, adolescents may benefit from veneers dental treatment instead of crowns

Depending on your smile line, face-shape, personality and personal preferences, you may want to choose your own style of veneers from dentists. The following veneers dental treatment pictures can give you an idea of what sort of tooth shapes are possible, this would also help Dr. Tong give you the exact smile you want too!

When Should Veneers Hong Kong Treatment Not be Considered

  • If there is significant caries or decay in the mouth
  • There is a high caries risk (poor diet, poor oral hygiene, certain medical conditions…etc.)
  • There is a very short clinical crown, some veneers dental treatment cases may benefit from having gum contouring treatment, which involves cutting away some of the gum to lengthen the amount of tooth that is available
  • There is minimal overlapping of your upper and lower teeth, such that any change to your usual biting habits can affect overall longevity of the veneers in HK
  • Pre-existing grinding/clenching habits that can cause extensive damage to veneers and your natural teeth

If these above cases are present, the disease should be controlled first and the underlying conditions sorted prior to considering cosmetic makeover. If veneers dental treatment is not suitable due to tooth condition, then another option of full crowns is available.

What Are Some Benefits & Drawbacks of Veneers?

  • Veneers dental treatment can fix your cosmetic concerns.
  • Veneers in Hong Kong are natural looking, and can match perfectly next to your existing natural teeth.
  • Veneers in HK can feel like natural teeth.
  • Veneers are minimally invasive, and only require the removal of a small portion of the outer enamel layer of the teeth.
  • Veneers dental treatment is a permanent change, which means you do not have to be worried about having to take them on or off, like dentures or other removable forms of treatment.
  • Veneers dentists will let you know they are easy to maintain, because you can treat it like your natural teeth, you will only need to brush and floss twice a day, and make sure to visit your veneers dentist for regular 6 monthly check-ups.
  • Veneers do not change colour – Unlike your natural teeth, veneers in HK do not change colour over time. This means that while your natural teeth can stain or change colour from eating food, drinking or smoking, your veneers will not. When this happens, the difference in colour can make your veneers stand out. Although this may be the case, regular cleansing at home and coming in for a professional clean by a veneers dentist can mitigate the issue, as well as reduce the chances of this happening.
  • Veneers dental treatment requires at least 2 appointments – During the first appointment, our veneers dentist will get an impression of your teeth, then design the teeth to your liking, and send it to the lab to construct the veneers in Hong Kong. Once they are ready you will be called back to fit them in by our veneers dentist.
  • Veneers can chip and break – Veneers HK materials used are relatively strong, however due to its thin and shell-like nature, they can be prone to chipping or cracking. Having the habit of chewing on hard/crunchy foods like nuts and chips or biting your nails can accelerate the process of chipping and cracking. Therefore, it is always suggested that all bad habits are mitigated prior to getting veneers in Hong Kong.

Types of Veneers in HK

Porcelain Veneers:

These types of veneers in Hong Kong are first to come to mind for most people, as they have been around since the early days. They are also known as the “traditional veneers”, where a veneers dentist removes the outer shell of your own natural tooth, and replaces it with a new shell to fit it onto your own natural tooth. Porcelain veneers in HK are permanently set on your teeth, and are less likely to break than composite veneers in Hong Kong.
There are different types of porcelain veneers in HK, and Dr. Tong will choose whichever type is most suitable for you accordingly. The types of porcelain veneers can range from stacked ceramic, pressed ceramic, lithium disilicate or zirconia. Each material offers a different set of benefits and drawbacks, but these will all be discussed thoroughly with you before any veneers dental treatment commences.

Composite Resin Veneers:

Composite Resin-type veneers in Hong Kong are offered when the transformation of your tooth required is relatively minor, or when there is a desire for a more cost-effective form of veneers dental treatment. Composite veneers in HK can reduce the appearance of chipped teeth, change minor discolorations and mask minor cracks.
By choosing the same color veneers as your natural tooth we can mold, shape and polish it to your liking and in the chair. Adjustments and repairs are easier than traditional porcelain veneers in HK, however, they are more prone to stains and chipping due to the nature of composite resin material. These types of veneers in Hong Kong may last up to 5 to 10 years if kept well and protected.

Zero-Preparation Veneers:

As the name suggests, no removal of tooth structure and enamel is required and no local anaesthetic is typically needed for this type of veneers dental treatment, because it is the least invasive. Just like porcelain veneers in HK, these thin shell-like veneers are made in the laboratory and made to fit your teeth. Once the lab has finished making the veneer in Hong Kong, you will be notified to come back and try them on to learn if they are to your liking, and then are glued onto your teeth.
If well-kept and taken care of with good oral hygiene and eating habits, these veneers in HK may last up to 10-15 years. However, zero-prep veneers dental treatment is only suitable for the right candidate, so please discuss this option with our veneers dentist - Dr. Tong to see if it is suitable for you.

Palatal Veneers:

Designed for patients with significant wearing of teeth, palatal veneers in Hong Kong are made out of composite resin, porcelain or even gold. Gold would be the most suitable option in these cases, as the veneer is placed on the inside surface of the tooth and provides the best strength and blending properties for you.
This type of veneers dental treatment is not commonly done nowadays, but are certainly an option to consider with your veneers dentist.

”3/4” and “7/8” Crown (Partial Veneers in HK):

These are less commonly used nowadays, and are only reserved for certain cases in which part of your tooth is still in good condition, and may be preserved rather than removed for a full crown construction. There are a few benefits for choosing this option of partial veneers dental treatment, which include:
  • Most of the margin between tooth and veneer is accessible for cleaning, making it more hygienic and less prone to future cavity formation or disease
  • Less gum irritation
  • Is easier to seat completely in the correct position for certain cases as the margins are directly visible
  • Is accessible for tooth vitality tests as part of the natural tooth structure is reserved

Gum Contouring During Veneers Dental Treatments

After an assessment is done by our veneers dentist – Dr. Tong of your overall oral condition, we will be able to tell if you require more than just veneers dental treatment to achieve the best overall result.

In some veneers HK cases, it is better to remove some of the overgrown gums around the teeth to have veneers dental treatment. It is a simple treatment whereby the gums are contoured and cut away to create symmetry between both sides of the teeth in length and width. Most gum contouring veneers Hong Kong cases are pain-free, but some slight discomfort may be expected for the first 2-3 days. Post-operative instructions will be provided by our veneers dentist if there is discomfort.

“Temporary” vs. “Permanent” Veneers

After preparing your teeth for veneers dental treatment, temporary veneers in HK will be made custom to fit your mouth. These will be attached to your teeth with temporary bonding cement and can last for a few weeks. During this time, you can assess the fit, shape and how your smile looks with the temporary veneers in Hong Kong. If you feel that they need any changes, please let our veneers dentist know, and after a second consultation we will be able to modify and change the final design to your liking, and then construct the permanent veneers in HK.

Your temporary veneers in Hong Kong are more delicate and porous by nature, hence there may be a chance for them to come off or chip during the wait for your permanent veneers to be made. Therefore, please take extra care when biting and chewing, as well as avoid eating sticky or hard foods.

These can include dental bridges, crowns, dentures and finally implants. Other than removable dentures, all other options are fixed and cannot be removed from the mouth. For these mentioned cases outside of normal veneers dental treatment, there are a few factors that will help us decide and recommend what is best for you:

  •                     The condition of the remaining tooth structure
  •                     The number of teeth needing replacement
  •                     The size of the existing gap
  •                     The condition of your other teeth (especially the those next to the gap)

Learn More About Getting Veneers in Hong Kong – FAQs:

1. “Composite” vs. “Porcelain” veneers in HK, how do I know which one is right for me?

Generally speaking, composite resin veneers in Hong Kong are the less costly option, and require less clinical visits. They are mostly used for smaller changes such as minor chips or small gaps. These veneers tend to last approximately 3-5 years, but can last longer if taken care of and closely monitored.

Porcelain veneers in HK on the other hand are slightly more costly, but offer longer lasting results (more than 10 years). By using this semi-transparent material that imitates tooth enamel, veneers dentists are able to achieve natural looking results while also avoiding excessive removal of tooth structure, as a crown would require. Porcelain material is less porous, meaning that it will pick up less plaque bacteria and stains.

Porcelain veneers in Hong Kong are reserved for cases which require more extensive reconstruction of your smile. Example situations where porcelain veneers would be a better option than composite veneers, would be uneven tooth size and shape in one or more teeth, badly stained or discoloured teeth, or large gaps between teeth that simple composite veneers cannot correct.

A consultation with our veneers dentist is needed to determine how many are most suitable for you. If there is a need to perform a cosmetic changeover, it would be most ideal to have veneers in Hong Kong made in sets of 2. For example, in 2, 4, 8 or 10. This is to ensure that desired symmetry can be achieved after veneers dental treatment.

Although they may not last a lifetime, veneers in Hong Kong can last up to 15-25 years. However, throughout this period there may be times when you accidentally chip one here and there after biting into a hard piece of bread. In such cases, if it is a small chip a veneers dentist may be able to fix it with a small filling material, but if it is a large portion of the veneer that has chipped off or broken, a replacement veneer in HK would be required.

In order to prolong the lifespan of your veneers in Hong Kong, it is suggested that you avoid chewing on hard foods (e.g. hard candy or nuts), avoid using your teeth to open bags and also make sure to keep up with good oral hygiene practices on a daily basis. Do so by brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste, and also flossing with either interdental brushes or floss.

Most of the time, local anaesthesia will be used for the veneers dental treatment process. Once numbing takes place, there should not be any discomfort or pain throughout the procedure. If it is determined that no preparation needs to be done on your teeth, no numbing may even be required. There may be some discomfort around the gums and jaw if more than 8 veneers are needed. If there is discomfort, please let our veneers dentist or staff know so that it can be treated accordingly. Usually, over the counter pain medication or mouth rinse will be able to alleviate the discomfort.

Most foods can be eaten after getting veneers. However, it is recommended that you stick to a soft diet for the first few days after veneers dental treatment, because it takes time for the cement (aka glue) to set. It also takes time for you to adjust your bite and eating motions to the new biting position, therefore eating soft foods will be better to avoid chipping or breaking the veneers.

Hard foods such as ice, hard biscuits and crackers, hard candy, sticky toffee, hard apples, carrots, nuts, pumpkin seeds or popcorn should be avoided in the long term after veneers dental treatment.

Do not fret. Although comparatively rare, sometimes veneers may come off once in a while. It is recommended that you preserve the veneer if possible and keep it in a safe place (a small plastic bag or box ideally), and then bring it to your veneers dentist. Your tooth may become sensitive to cold air or cold food and drinks while the veneers are off, if this is the case, call up our veneers dentist, and we will try to fit you into our next available spot!
Yes, you can brush and floss your teeth as you normally would after veneers dental treatment. Make sure to use the appropriate technique as discussed with our veneers dentist, and focus on brushing along the gumline with soft circular motions. Veneers in HK are normally very durable, but also require maintenance care and monitoring, therefore make sure to continue with regular 6 monthly check-up and cleansing appointments.
